Introduction: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is common in men and represents an important cause of lower urinary tract symptoms. Pharmacological strategies seek to improve symptoms and expand available therapeutic options.
Methodology: A descriptive, qualitative narrative review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 recommendations for evidence identification, selection, and synthesis. PubMed, Scopus, and SciELO were searched for publications between 2021 and 2026 in Spanish and English. Studies addressing pharmacological therapies for benign prostatic hyperplasia were included.
Results: A total of 115 records were identified, and after duplicate removal and selection criteria were applied, 9 articles were included in the synthesis. Studies evaluated drug combinations, dose adjustments, emerging alternatives, and treatments targeting urinary symptoms. Improvements were observed in symptoms, urinary flow, and postvoid residual volume, although some interventions did not demonstrate significant benefits.
Conclusions: The evidence shows an evolution toward combined and individualized therapies. Some emerging alternatives require longer follow-up to confirm their clinical utility.
