Abstract

This article analyses the theoretical and practical foundations for building effective learning environments in Early Childhood settings (kindergartens and nurseries), based on the self-determined curricular modality. Drawing from a documentary review of de Guide for the Adaptation of Educational Spaces of the Early Childhood Education (Palma Toloza et al., n.d), ten keys dimensions for the organization and management of educational space, comfort and environmental appeal, adaptations for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), management of disruptive behaviours, assessment of space effectiveness, daily schedule planning, welcoming children on First days, and limit-setting strategies. Findings reveal that the intentional organization of the physical environment directly influences children’s autonomy, emotional well-being, and learning quality. It is concluded that the educational space constitutes a ‘third educator’ whose adaptation must be continuously planned, evaluated, and adjusted, with particular attention to diversity and inclusion.
