Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as an innovative tool in education due to its ability to transform teaching and learning processes, particularly in the development of writing skills. This study aimed to analyze the use of artificial intelligence in writing instruction by identifying its opportunities, contributions, and risks for strengthening linguistic competencies. A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines through the search, selection, and analysis of scientific studies published between 2019 and 2026 in academic databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, ERIC, IEEE Xplore, SciELO, and Google Scholar. The review included 23 studies focused on generative artificial intelligence, language models, automated feedback, personalized learning, and ethical challenges associated with these technologies. The findings indicate that AI can support written production through idea generation, language correction, content revision, and personalized feedback, contributing to the development of communication skills and more reflective writing processes. However, challenges related to technological dependence, authorship issues, academic integrity, and the need to strengthen digital competencies among students and teachers were also identified. It is concluded that artificial intelligence represents a valuable complementary resource for writing education, provided that its implementation follows pedagogical, ethical, and critical approaches that enhance human capabilities without replacing the cognitive processes involved in writing.
